Winter beckons. Time for a good read.

Short Stories are my favourite reading material. They say that writing a short story is quite difficult because of the limitations on words. Chekohov was and remains the master of the genre of whom many other authors have aspired yet few have succeeded.

Below is a site with a wide selection to choose from which you may enjoy. Lots of well known authors including Chekhov as well the not so well known. The approximate length of reading time is given for each story.

    The site.

My all time favourite is Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky. I have all his published works. Like Bulgakov, a master of magical realism with an acute ability to tell of the horrors of Stalinst Russia in a remarkable surrealist style.

Here’s a short sample of his work.

    Whatever you read - Enjoy!

"I wrote you a long letter because I didn't have the time to write a short one" (variously attributed)

I remember as a kid being entered by my school (why does that sound so wrong?) into a writing competition, words being my forte, as you're no doubt compelled to agree. I had to write a story in 50 words or less. Bloody difficult.

Anyhow, fast forward many years and me kid was entered into a similar comp, this one with 100 words or less, and she only went and bloody well won, didn't she?

    Must be good DNA.

One of my favourite musicians, Nerina Pallot, wrote a song inspired by a very short story called Popular Mechanics, by Raymond Carver. She said she was given it as a piece to critique in her English A Level, and it had affected her ever since. I looked it up and read it myself, and I can see what she meant...

I've read a few gems over the years, but to be honest, the vast majority have been quite painful. I think a lot of aspiring authors try to use shorts as a way of showing off what they can do with words, others use them to show how they do plot twists and surprises. The result is that it all feels too much like poetry, which is basically literary masturbation*. Fun to do on your own but you shouldn't share it with the rest of the world.

*I'm sure I read this somewhere but I don't know who to attribute it to and I'm not about to do a search for it on the works internet.

I really need to make the time to read some classics.
