    This time.....

Thurso. They finally trust me on the big island

There's a nuclear reactor, and the man who invented the fax machine in the 1850s was born nearby. What else?

Are your employers allowed to do that in a disciplinary?

Cruel and unusual and all that.

That's weird. The FAX machine was invented before the telephone. I didn't know that.

How do you think the telephone inventor got the instructions to the second bloke so he'd have someone to call?

    But not before the telegraph.

I think Alexander Bain’s “fax machine” wasn’t built at the time, but it’s been tried in recent years and it did work.

Anyway I work ten miles from Thurso and there are still some faxes. That must mean something.

Strictly speaking, there were at least eight appliances at Dounreay, ten miles west of Thurso, that could be called nuclear reactors, one of which rejoiced in the name TOAD.

The structures of three reactors are still in place, although the last one shut down in 1994. The control room of one has been set up in a sort of museum called “Caithness Horizons” in Thurso’s old town hall.

If you’re prepared to travel 20 miles to Wick and it’s not an on-call night for me, I’m not above meeting you for a beer in the Alexander Bain (Wetherspoons).
