My CBR600FX (ultra reliable allegedly!) with 22000 miles on has developed a whine in 3rd and higher gears, guessing output bearing took a dump?
Anyone had similar and if so was the repair costly? Thinking a replacement engine will be cheaper!

Off to a reputable motorcycle engineer on Saturday for him to take a look and give me an opinion.

Gearbox bearings shouldn't be difficult to fix, engine out, turn it upside down, split crankcases, replace bearing, reassemble.

    Thatís good news then, thanks.
Have to see what the man says tomorrow regarding cost then, hoping less than a replacement motor!

An engine looks to be about £400, I don't think your repair bill will be that much if you take the engine out yourself, and you'll have the benefit of an engine you know, you could buy a 2nd hand engine that's worse than the one you've got.

Have identical, right down to the FX, but with 54k on it & have every reason to believe it's been boosted about the place at least in the many miles before I got him. And those by a track racer too.

Mine is fine, although honda boxes of that vintage aren't perhaps the most robust. I'd check alignment etc 1st before drastic dismissal.

I might add mine reads my mind & just does stuff, be it smelling the flowers or having people on the brakes. Lovely predicable thing.

I'd do that in 30 minutes with a couple of auld spoons while sucking on a roll up.

Even more so if its common with the engine, which of course, it is!

But yes, bearings should be reasonably easy, as long as you have two bent teaspoons and a spliff.

Didnít make it to get inspected as was nursing the mother of all hangovers, now arranged for next weekend.
Oil is all good, chain tension fine however doesnít mean itís been good in the past and that may have damaged the output bearing?

Overall though I agree they are great all round bikes, considering nearly 20 years old it still looks well too unlike many other makes.
