Hi, I've just removed the oil filter from my Beta Motard M4 (Suzuki DR 350 engine) and the oil seal that should be between the back of the filter and the inner engine case is missing, the engine sounds and runs normal and there are no debris in the drained oil, it must have been like this for about 1,800 miles am I likely to have damaged anything. Thanks.

I guess it means that 'some' oil would have been pumped into the filter housing and back out into the engine again without passing through the paper filter.

Worst case, slightly dirtier oil circulating the engine than normal, which could potentially increase the wear, but I doubt you'd notice.

Where in South Yorkshire are you?

I'm from Doncaster, but I emigrated to Barnsley.

I thought a DR350 had a cartridge filter rather than a canister one, if it's a cartridge one you can change it without draining the oil.

Moorends near Thorne, about 2 mile from J6 M18. I worked with some great lads from Barnsley down the pits, if you need an interpreter let me know.

My old man went to Thorne Grammer, all his family are from Hatfield Woodhouse.

Isn't Moorends a hive of scum and villainy?

Yes it is a cartridge filter under a cover held on with three bolts. I must have left the seal out the last time I changed it .

I had a jap import DR250SHM, same motor just sleeved down. IIRC the cover has a big spring on the back to keep the filter pushed up against the oil channels. With the seal all the oil has to pass through the filter, without the seal, some may circulate without passing through the filter.

It'll be fine, if you're worried change the oil and filter, if the 1800 miles are mostly off road it's due anyway.

I was changing the oil and filter when I noticed it was missing the seal, I was worried I was loosing oil pressure to the cam shaft bearings, if it has just allowed a little oil to bypass the filter I can live with that, at least I did refit the spring which kept the filter up tight against the housing. Thanks all.
