My jigsaw finally gave up the ghost yesterday as I was cutting up pallets. And it got me thinking that a circular saw would be more suitable for my usage.

I like the thought of a cordless one, but are they any good?

In short, Yes they have really come on in the last five or so years.
I have one as well as a couple of pretty industrial corded circular saws and most months the corded ones don't even come out of my van toolsafe.

As with all the power hungry tools, the bigger amp hour batteries they have the better but something with 4 or more amp hour batteries work fine even for most tradespeople.

Crosscuts don't use as much power as ripcuts with real timber but they don't seem to mind any direction with plywood.

I doubt I'll buy another corded circular saw now unless its for a very specific job with big timbers.

These days I'd run off and check YouTube for reviews. Have a rough idea what it is you want to do with one, find a YouTube channel that does it, see what saw they are using. Most of the big name YouTubers will be either sponsored or reviewing tools (or both). RR Buildings (chap builds post frame workshops) is a good one, he uses a variety of different cordless saws and its a fascinating channel to boot.

I like the look of the Makita ones and I already have 2 batteries. This one has good reviews and an electronic brake which is good for a numpty like me

There is a nice 18 volt Makta one I've used that convinced me that they had come on to the point where they are viable.
It had an aluminium base, err can't remember much beyond that. Nice machine though.Think it has a left side blade.
Mines a Festool HKC but that would involve expendeture on another battery platform for you. Seems kind of pointless unless you plan on using it all the time. Its been well worth it for me but even most tradesmen don't see where the extra money went till they use mine with me for a few days.

I bought a mitre saw recently and have had a good use out of it, but seeing this makes me want one. I have my decking to rip up and rebuild this summer so I might just be able to justify the purchase.

In amongst the old stuff left by the previous owner, I found a Bosch jigsaw. Fired up and works OK.

But still not gonna stop me getting a circular saw

It arrived yesterday and before I run outside, I'm breaking all man rules. I'm reading the manual (sorry )

Anyway, the manual says to alter the cut depth for everything you cut. Should only have the size of a tooth projecting below the workpiece.

Sensible advice, or is it them being a bit mumsy ?

    Fuck you 2

Had a go and it's awesome. Cuts through the pallets like hot knife through butter. And I did set the blade height
