    Hi All

Picked up a Burgman 400K2 the other day. It been standing for over a year and teh previous owner said it needed a new battery which he would put on. When I asked why it needed a new battery he said it wasn't holding a charge. i assumed it would more likely be a charging fault and I was right.

Put a meter across the battery terminals and got the following readings,

    engine off 12.7v
engine running 12.8v and then 12.6v the lower being when the lights were switched on.

I tried a second hand regulator which is supposedly good, but it didn't solve anything. I'm looking into how to check it is okay later. Before i did that, I disconnected the reg/rec and put my meter onto the various terminals on the loom from the stator. With the engine running I got this voltage reading and with it off this resistance reading.

Does this conclude the stator needs replacing and eliminates the reg/rec?

I will no doubt get shot down, but 14 volts from an unregulated alternator is very low. The one on my le will put out 40volts happily without the reg. A drop of one or two volts accross the reg suggests its not that bad

I read that wrong. No idea what the resistance should be....thought that was volts. So you get less volts from the alternator than you get at the battery? Alternator...him fucked.

Depends on the revs doesn’t it? I know my Harley has a stator output of 16-20v per 1000 rpm

    Spec,

    AN400X to K2 models
Unregulated voltage 56 volts AC @ 5000 rpm
Regulated voltage 13.5 to 15 volts DC @ 5000 rpm
Stator coil resistance 0.15 to 0.45 ohm

You need to check AC voltage between each of the 3 pairs matched up of the three same-colour wires. Should be in that range 56v AC. If any of the pairs are low (zero) then a winding has melted.

If the alternator has melted, look to why. Could be a corroded plug on the charging system or earths. Also regulator failure can do it, or even a loose battery terminal.

Thanks. I've go to remove thebodywork to get to anything and this is oneo fthe worse bikes i've ever had to do that. Everything is interlocked,s pretty much everything has to come off to get to the bit you want. Sent a couple of hours getting the under seat storage box out to check the connector from the stator, only to find out its not there in this model! I go in for knee replacement on wednesday so this will be the project for when i'm more mobile again. What with this and a dead KTM my decking looks like a bike graveyard. Might put them on ebay as non runners and see what happens...

In the meantime this will help clear cut and simple guidance an testing the various components.

Enjoy(!) the knee replacement. I had my left one done 7 years ago and it's made a huge difference although I must say in the days following the op it didn't feel like it.

Oh, and what everyone else said about the stator is probably correct......

That's a very kind offer, thank you. Sadly there's no MOT etc so its parked where it stays for now, but again, thanks.
