Booked, I'm in lower group because I'm still slow, on my FZR400RR with it's new (to me) £50 scabby light weight track fairing and seat

Another good track day, changed front tyre to a Conti Race tyre after the first session, wish I'd put it on 3 track days ago, transformed the bike and my riding, going much quicker now.

One wet session just after lunch, rest were dry, last session was particularly good.

    More details will follow.

    Session 1

    Got bike off trailer etc.
Met up with my mate Rob who was running in his Z1000J 1170 Endurance race bike.
Went down to pit lane for first session, got cramp in my left hip as I lifted my foot onto the peg, had to get off the bike and dance around for a bit to get rid of it.
On the sighting laps I knew I was going to have to change at minimum the front tyre as the front wasn't warming up and felt a bit lacking in grip.
Oggies felt especially gripless, but it felt odd all day, maybe the cars at the weekend left a lot of rubber there.
After 3 laps we were free to go as fast as we want, we did one more full lap and then it was time to come in.

Got my front tyre changed for a Conti Race Attack that I've had since September last year before the second session.

    Session 3

Out on new tyre so took it easy for a couple of laps and then increased speed, new tyre much better than old and I'm pretty quickly go faster than before, bike no longer runs wide coming out of corners and I'm now going round Coram in 5th instead of 4th.

    Session 4

Faster again, now catching people in the corners for them to leave me on the straights, I need to get more confident with over taking.

    Session 5

It's raining at the A11 end of the track and dry at Coram, hardly anyone on track, good session taking the wet bits smoothly and picking up speed on the dry bits

    Session 6

Lots of people packed up, so fairly quiet, I'm now catching quite a few people and have to do some slightly iffy overtakes as with 40bhp less than anyone else on track, I have to either outbrake them or cut underneath of them mid corner, I'm not confident enough to go around the outside of them.

    Session 7

Quieter than session 6, my best session of the day, I'm feeling confident and relaxed, probably a bit too confident as I go into Hamilton a bit too quick for me and scare myself a little, I probably could have got round if I'd stuck with it, but instead I sit the bike up a bit, brake and make a mess of the corner, anyway I carry on and get quicker, probably need to apologise to the roafbike R6 rider I block passed, but after following him for half a lap I had to get past somewhere. Lapped someone else on a trackday R6, I think it's the first time I've lapped someone on a trackday. Really enjoyed this session.

Packed up, bike on trailer, drove home.

I am, got Cadwell booked for June 29th, but I'm wondering if I can fit another trackday in between now and then.

Bikes I found interesting on Tuesday

    Yamaha R1Z
    Yamaha TR 350 race bike
Suzuki RG500, probably Mk6, race bike
    MZ250 race bike

Only problem with all of them is that you're over-riding them to even stay in the same ball-park as other bikes, modern bikes would absolutely blow your mind with how easy/good they are in a track context.

I know you like the old stuff, but i think you'd find a lot of pleasure in a modern track bike. Doesn't need to be £10,000, you can get a cracking machine for £3000.

I don't feel the need to keep up with more modern bikes, I know a bike with traction control and abs would be much easier to ride, but it's not what I want to do, I'm pretty happy where I'm at, but a 600 engine in my 400 would make overtaking easier.

Giving it a little more thought, I went down the newer, faster bike route when I did track days in 2001 - 2004, but my enjoyment dropped as the bike I used got faster, so this time round I think I'll stick with a 400.

I'm not saying this is what other people should do, but I think this is what is right for me.

That's OK man, we're not arguing, i've spent the last 3 years doing the slow bike thing with the 690 single... it's a hoot overtaking people i can agree completely. I've now got a bit faster a bike, but i'm not convinced it will change my lap times (if i knew them) at all.

Enjoy the bike, you are having fun.

I've had a few real nice trackday bikes but the most fun I've had has been on the unsuitable / older bikes, the most fun being a Triumph 955i referred to as 'Pig Iron' by the garage I was in at Snett. It was great fun to hustle and upset a fair few guys on fancy machinery.

The 400 wonít be quite so far behind at Cadwell with shorter straights.
The best track bike I ever owned was a cb500, they surprise lots of people.

I think this was my 1st track day this year where I wasn't over taken by CB500s, but only because they were all in Inters and fast.

FZR is under geared for Snetterton, I'm getting flat out in top on the back straight every lap well before my (early) braking point.

Photos are out, I look quicker in them than I did, but I don't think I'll be worrying the fast group this year

My mate Rob and me, not sure if I'm cutting under him or he's going round the outside of me, I suspect the latter.
