Check the code etched on the old bearings matches the new ones. Wouldn't be the first time that aftermarket were 'compatible' rather than same.

Unfortunately I'm still waiting on a follow up reply from All Balls. I know they are an upgrade as like many bikes the originals aren't roller taper, but did they also do away with two different bearings because two of the same roughly did the same job? Who knows..

And I don't know what a cheesy hedge pig is

    Good to know!

Ok I've made a video as it's probably easier.

Before this, I've used a threaded rod with 2 steel plated on either end and inside the old races on the new races and I've tightened them up to the point the steel has started to warp slightly. The races are 100% in.

Now I'm 100% convinced the stem bearing is 100% home too, and if it isn't it could probably only move half a mm at best, definitely won't account for the 3mm I'm missing at the top.

The microfiche doesn't show a seal under the bottom bearing. It won't be 3mm thick on the washer part , but the lip may be creating that 3mm gap.

No, you're right. It doesn't show a seal on the top bearing either. I'm assuming it's because the seal is considered part of the bearing.. Hoping / Assuming. But yeah either way two of those seals are only about 1/4 mm each. Still scratching my head

Microfiche shows two different part numbers for bearings with the same diameter. I don't have either in hand (guess you took out OEM bearings so you would know if anyone) but looks from Google images that the bottom bearing has an integrated seal.

Perhaps the kit you bought included two separate seals to suit other models? Was the bottom bearing an internally sealed type?

    Reckon I've got it.

Original parts internally sealed bearing for bottom yoke.

Allballs kit includes two external seals, but doesn't include the internally sealed bearing for bottom yoke.

The bottom bearing should be 16mm tall including the internal seal. With the external seal allballs have sold you it'll have maybe 16.5mm stack height, same for the top except the 16mm high OEM bearing is unsealed. The thickness of the 2 washer parts won't rob you 3mm, but could be the seal lips stop the yokes going all the way home, which is where your friction is coming from.

I think what you're calling a dust cap is actually used as a seal. To be fair it looks like it should seal on that machined face on the top of the neck.

Try it just without the top seal. See how you go. If not, it needs the bottom one out too. However you obviously can not run it without a seal. So you'd need an internally sealed bearing like OEM.

Interesting. So you're saying I probably shouldn't have fitted the seal underneath the bearing on the steering stem?

And no, the bottom bearing didn't appear to be integrated seal, although I didn't exactly take it off in a clean manner. I cut the bearing cage, ripped it off, cut the seal underneath the bearing (same as the one I've fitted) and had to angle grind the race off.
