    Isn't the real answer for a 1500 commuter bike a VFR750?

Budget is a grand or less. Otherwise I'd say SH300.

Got a budget of a 1000, ideally less.

Needs to be able to do fast A roads and motorways to commute to work.

    Going to look at a 1995 XJ600 with 41k for 875.

Works for me...literally. Refuses to do anything except start on the button and run like a sewing machine

If you don't mind spending 500 to have half the bike removed to get the valves adjusted. It's also heavy, which isn't ideal in traffic.

The 04 bike is a cbf500, the later model with efi. Not sure what the OP has against efi, it's more reliable than old carbs. The xj600 has carb heaters, early ones oil heated later ones electric. Neither worked and they carb ice like a bastard. Don't get that on efi.

Edit: oops looks like that one is carbs too.

Has HISS by look of it. That won't hurt insurance quotes

This is 2 miles from my front door.

    There's no replacement for displacement.

I ran a Divvy as a commuter for a few years back in the 90s. I liked it well enough: Not very exciting but it was comfortable, reliable and economical.

I'm not sure how they'd be now after 20 years though. I suppose like anything, it depends entirely on how it's been treated.
