Hi everyone, I'm looking for some opinions!

I'm buying a new helmet soon, and I'm pretty sure it'll be an Arai Debut as they fit perfectly and aren't crazy money. I've got an older Arai chaser at the moment which I usually wear with sunglasses, apart from at night obviously.

I'm toying with the idea of getting either a dark visor with this helmet, or the pro shade system.

I tried the pro shade on in a shop and I think I could deal with the strip of non-tinted light at the bottom, but I ride most of the time with my visor up slightly rather than fully locked, and with sunglasses the whole of my forward view is tinted, which is great. If I used the pro shade system with the visor slightly open, then because of the non tinted strip at the bottom, coupled with it being up slightly, I'd have an even bigger portion at the bottom which isn't tinted, and that could get annoying!

Does anyone have the pro shade system and rate it? Or has anyone else tried one and gone back to a standard dark visor or sunglasses? The pro shade seems like a good solution if you have your visor locked and shut all the time, but I don't! I've always stayed away from fully dark visors so I don't have to carry a spare clear one around with me too - but if anyone has any good suggestions for easily carrying a spare visor that would be good to know. I'm trying to avoid sunglasses for the safety aspect but they seem to be the best all round solution.

    Thanks in advance!

Strip of masking tape along the inside top of the visor, lower edge of the strip just above eye line. Keeps low Sun out of your eyes (ideal), gives a clear view of the road surface (preferable). Job jobbed.

I'm currently running one of these. Yeah I know it's not an Arai but it is a cracking lid, but th pin lock visor and the drop down sun visor inside is the bollocks. I wear both glasses and contact lenses and it suits me just fine. Dark visors are just a faff if you have to carry a spare clear one everywhere you go.

I always wear a dark visor due to the fact my right eye doesnt squint due to nerve damage. Any brightness gives me problems so dark visor pretty much all year round and carry a clear to change if i end up out at night for a long trip. If its a short trip i have a pair of clear MX goggles when wearing the Tour X4

I looked at the proshade system and didnt think much of it in all honesty

I have also used Horse's suggestion of tape across the top of the visor, but inside a race black visor on an Arai Astro but dont bother on the 3 Tour X helmets i have owned as the peak does that job

Good idea about the googles for the Tour-X4. I have a dark visor on mine and it's a good 5min job to change to the clear one when it gets dark.

The Pro Shade looks like a right lash up. Either get a dark visor or different lid with a drop down visor.

I have a drop down visor in my shark and tbh I'd not buy a lid without one now. No need for 2 visors and like you I like riding with my visor open. I leave the dark visor down and the main visor open in town and you get almost the same airflow as no visor whilst having the tint for sun and no need to worry about a bumble bee in your eye.

Thanks for the replies, not sure if I know what to do still though! I used to have a strip along the top of the visor and it worked well so I may just do that again with sunglasses, but some shatterproof ones which are meant for riding rather than regular ones. Based on fit alone I'll be getting the arai so an internal visor isn't an option although that would solve all the problems in one haha. Shark, AGV, Shoei and HJC I've tried too and none of them fit as well as the arai debut.

Like Yin I've always run dark visors for years n years, dont like wearing sunglasses under a lid, but a Royal PITA if you need to change visors with the Arai X4 (Shoei Hornet wasnt so bad) but last time out I opted for a Drop down visor lid and its a revelation, no visor swapping, not putting up with "its too dark" under trees, sun goes in yadda yadda etc, much easier to live with

The visor mech has been updated on the new ARAI lids so it is 30 seconds to change...

So dark visor for me. Change when need too ... (rarely)

I could change the visor on a normal Arai in 10 seconds... not on a Tour-X4... you have to remove four screws with a coin.

I broke 3 side pods on my Arai' before going to a Shoei. Now thinking of getting a Chaser X and dark visor. I've always had a strip across the top edge, clear or dark visor. Did think about a Shoei GT Air2 with an integral dark visor but don't like the new ratchet strap fastener and having a big void at the front/top of the helmet must compromise the strength of the helmet.
