He's had a vfr 800fx for ten years and while it's been the ideal bike, it's never excited him. He just retired and decided it's time for a new bike. Budget is not huge, a 2.5k ceiling.

He's looked at a last model year gs1200f, but it didn't seem to do it for him although it was a good bike.

He's looked at an 03 BMW r1100s, good bike and seemed to catch his imagination, but won't fit through his front gate.

Should be in or near Portsmouth so he can look at it. Nothing sporty due to 70 year old knees. While the above models are large displacement, it's not necessarily an essential.

    What's he need?

Have you asked him?? Panigali is the answer of course but you will only get a wheel for 2.5k R1150GS and widen the gate posts.

He's not exactly sure what he wants, hence the thread

I did suggest widening the gate.

How is his 70 year old hips? If he can get his leg over i was going to say a Tiger 800. Looks thinner than the GS, better riding position for him and should come in his rice range.

    :EDIT:

Maybe not Just had a look as they seem to hold there value rather well.

Having looked at great big monsters like that BMW and bandit I suppose he's not worryied about large bikes.

Rather than which bike, what attributes does he want? If you twist the handle, a VFR isn't exactly 'slow', so is it acceleration? That might point to either a sports bike or bigger engine - and that could go to bikes as diverse as V-Max or Blackbird.Or more nimble, so lighter or twitchier handling? Back to sports bikes - but they are likely to be smaller and cramped.

He's mentioned v-max as something he always kind of fancied. He has said for a long time that his favourite bike he's had was a 97ish cbr1000f for its ease of use and comfort, plus the power ofc. A blackbird would be the obvious follow on from that.

    He wants a 500 Bullet!

or a 900 Hornet, CCM R30, 1000DS Multistrada or a TRX850... they were all on my 2.5k bike shortlist.

Bullet is a great suggestion actually, at least to find out what he actually wants or would rule out.

He's talked about 900 hornets I think to get the fireblade engine again (he's had a 98 orange one) but without the backache.

I toyed with the idea of a Firestorm too.

They can be picked up seriously cheap, which would leave some cash to sort out the suspension.

I even looked at SV1000's too.

Not a bad idea at all. Again, bit different from what he's had before so may appeal.

Was it that a firestorm has to be a later one if you want the capacity and to be able to afford to go more than round the block? Or are late ones still crap on fuel?

Yeah, the later ones got a larger tank. There's also some worries about the Honda CCT's so people replace them with manual ones. iirc the same period Fireblade forks are a direct transplant too.

Firestorm doesn't appeal, don't want an Italian bike.

I'm starting to think he will be keeping the vfr.

CB1300 might be in budget for a leggy one.

    How about a 955 Tiger?

If he's got as far as looking at a Bimmer, then sort the gate

Or is it the 'sit up high' style he likes, in which case what about Varadero Versys etc. Japanese traily style variations?
