Very little mileage but kept on optimate 4
Shows 12.74 volts but not enough in there to start the bike.
    It turns slowly then ppfffft.
Wazz the big charger on it and 5 mins later we have a running bike.
I'm guessing a 3yo battery is at the end of its life, or is it?

Wouldnt a failed cell give a reading of less than 12v though (2.2v/cell)

Now dont kill me if I am wrong..but is it to do with modern materials getting "lazy"? Like phone batteries( I noes they r liffium) ...even lead acids get weak if kept on charge..I killed a set of very expensive house batteries on the boat by leaving the Victron inverter/ charger on whilst away.

Surely that was the draw from the invertor that fubared your leisure batteries.
My camper has a 150w solar panel and my leisure and main batteries float at 13.9 nearly all year round. Main battery is 5yo and leisure is 3

I've had nothing but trouble with AGM batteries. Give me a regular old fashioned overweight lead acid cell any day. I rather suspect they are too well engineered with the minimum amount of material, built down to a cost.

The last thing I need to worry about when my bike is upside down is whether or not the battery might leak. Modern chargers reduce the possibility of overcharging and damaging plates, not sure what else AGM is supposed to be good at other than saving you petrol.

It's the orientation of the battery in the bike that is the issue with lead acid. The plates would be partially uncovered and so kill the battery v quickly

When you take the battery off the charger it will show a falsely high reading (known as surface charge). Fully charged usually shows 13.5 or so. So even with a dodgy cell it may show well over 12 immediately you take it off charge.

    A-ha!
I knew someone would say that.
Gave it a couple of hours last night on the big charger, checked v, 13.6.
I have literally just checked it after a night settling and we have 13.2.
Thumbed the button and bike started no problem.
Perhaps I have the worlds crappest optimate. When it's doing its thing it has the green and yellow light on. Maybe it's not putting enough juice into the battery, the 6a charger certainly put a spring in its step.

All good...but it won't have any reserve for cool weather etc.
But if its working...keep it till it doesn't.

By the way...whats all this "Thumbed the button and bike started no problem"? How many times did you have to kick it?
