All three series of the era you're looking at will have iDrive as standard, that doesn't necessarily mean it will have Sat Nav, phone and all the rest of it as standard.

The standard Professional CD/Radio plays CD's with MP3's on them and has an AUX input, some have USB (it was an option). It also lets you change some settings. You can get all the service info from the dash.

I looked at retro fitting the CIC, but it was a 1000 for seconds hard parts and fitting, you need a whole new dash top and several additional boxes that hide in the passenger foot well and under the boot floor.

Also don't assume a car has bluetooth just because it has the steering wheel buttons.

So maybe I will look at diesels too, but its normally the noise of the things that put me off?
Don't believe the hype, my 3.0D will do 46mpg on a long journey but my average is more like 30mpg.

Not that it's a bad thing, the 8 speed (actually a ZF unit also used by Jag) in particular is excellent IME. Proper throttle blips on downshift and hangs on til the redline kf you want it to.
I have that 8 speed gearbox and it is good, I'm not a fan of autos but that does the job nicely and I'd much rather that than a dual clutch job.

Yeah an E46? Taipan is looking at the E93 which came after it. AFAIK all E93s (and subsequent models) have iDrive which replaces loads of dashboard buttons.
