The Legionella bacterium lives off sludge, rust, scale.

Start running the tap slowly, get the temperature up, then let the water flow for a solid 5 mins at maximum temperature. Do this once a week, reduce or remove any limescale. You should do this with shower heads too.

Another concern are water butts. Legionnella thrives in those conditions, so when using the water from the butt, decant it into a bucket, and use. WHATEVER you do, don't attach a hose and use to clean your car/bike etc as you'll be spraying mist about, which could (likely) contain the bacteria. Also, bear this in end for hose pipes which have been left lying around. Roll them up, empty them, and keep them on a hose reel.

If'n you're not going to be using the tap take it out, or at the least take the handle off it, if you reduce your exposure to the water to zero you'll not have to worry about it ever again

Wow, interesting thread! I didnt realise such a threat could come through a dis/rarely used tap and sink. I think id have it removed and the risk along with it!

That's what Veggie said. Use it or take it out.
