I was very young !! and always remember hating her, Shari Lewis. It seems her daughter is still inflicting her "moms" puppetry on more recent youth.

I'l reserve judgement until I watch it. It might be great, a miniseries is going to be the only way possible (apart from a full length series) to tell any IMBanks story.

So doesn't that make the 'fi' the important element? When Star Wars was released, someone described it as 'cowboys and Indians in space'.

Edit: as a comparison, set The Elephant Man some time in the future, make him an alien. Similar prosthetics, same story, etc.

Exactly. Sci-Fi is generally derided because it's "spaceships and laser guns" - but the good stuff is just as good as anything else. (similarly, shit fiction is still shite. )

I thought The expanse was awesome. It was set in a credible universe, and blended future tech, space, politics and people into an enthralling tale. In many ways sci-fi can be an allegory of history as much as a vision of the future. The Expanse is both of these.

They televised Crow Road (Iain not Iain M.) but even tho I have it on DVD I have never got through it.
So it isn a great leap to think that they would screw up the Culture series, even with a Netflix budget.

Some of the recent Dr Who certainly went away from the aliens & lasers route!

IIRC Amazon are producing it, which doesn't fill me with pleasure - but the new Expanse season looks awesome.

For me, good Sci Fi is the sort of stuff that looks where tech seems to be going and extrapolates it way into the future.
Ian M Banks has done quite a lot of that within the field of artificial consciousness.

Some of Hamiltons short stories cover some excellent cyborg ideas, not so blown away by his Nights Dawn stuff which got a bit ferkin old fast.
Sonnies Edge was a great short story, read the story then saw it on the animated Love Death and Robots anthology series on Netflix. Good on both mediums.

The ones that could just be a cowboy story, just set somewhere else? Not so much.
