That's not retail price - allegedly these Maison Margiela jackets are highly collectible. They're fashion jackets, not safety gear, but I'm thinking of borrowing one or two of the ideas for a bespoke jacket which I'm getting from BKS.

Many years ago a class I was in was split into pairs and had to 'sell' bic biros.

I said we'd paint them gold, put some crystals on them and charge 10,000 each.

Most of the class laughed, but the professor said it was a legitimate marketing ploy. Put the price up high enough and stupid people will buy them for exclusivity or be convinced the product is superior.

Tru dat. I enjoy checking out the most expensive biker jackets from the fashion houses. They have to stick to the boggo Perfecto or cafe racer design ideas but give them some sort of twist. RRP is often $5,000 - $6,000. You can usually count on Balmain for a good effort:

    Or Gucci:

    Not forgetting D squared:

Always been the way. People with a lot of money want to feel they're getting something more expensive than others can afford, but exclusivity isn't always a guarantee of better quality. Emperors new clothes and all that...

FWIW, quality costs too. I guess it's still the same, but it used to be roughly an exponential increase in cost to achieve finer surface finishes on metal. And, no, I don't have a link - it was part of my day release college course

Agreed, but then you get to wander around the Gucci concession in Selfridge's and you just sit there, dumbstruck by the moronic behaviour of the customers*, looking at a 500 pair of trainers like they were the second coming of Christ.
