also worth checking / replacing the fuel filter, cheap and easy, and worthwhile anyway , as they are frequently left unchanged way beyond their intended life.

Didn't use it over the weekend as was away.

Jumped in this morning and reached Hatfield, about 8 miles away, without any incident. Filled with fuel and bastid nearly cut out on me twice coming out of the petrol station. Ran iffy for next few miles. In traffic the rev counter at idle was dancing between 800-1200rpm like I was gently blipping the throttle only I wasn't. Normal idle is 800rpm. Couple of miles later and it drove pretty much normal including idle. Gonna try and book it in for Fri.

My money is still on a failing mass airflow sensor. It isn't working outwith its normal range so no engine management light but not monitoring the airflow properly hence poor running. It is all the normal symptoms for a failing sensor.

I was now thinking a sensor as it seemed like the engine couldn't work out what fuel/revs it needed rather than fuel not getting through. It's not hunted like that before, but it really didn't seem like the car knew what revs to settle at.

Took it in Friday and nothing showing up on the diagnostic. They tried it cold, left it running a fair while and took it out for a test drive and nothing showing as a problem. They said it sounds like a failing sensor but until one shows up a fault they cant say which one.

Guessing my best bet is to get a cheap machine myself and try and get a reading whilst its iffy.

Trouble with the cheap ones is the can mislead you. Mine said it was the bank sensors when it was actually the o2 sensor. As my o2 sensor was faulty it supplied the wrong information to the bank sensors and they logged the fault or something like that?

I take it the car hasn't displayed the engine management light if no codes are stored. Might be worth you cleaning the vanos sensor. Have a read here and watch there...

Mr Longbeard, might be a good thing for you to do on your Daughters new Mini.

The wifes car would not idle smooth. It was all over the place what got annoying so ran this through with the fuel. Cured the issue with the first tank full. There is a diesel version also what has both my vans running a lot smoother and i am sure slightly more mpg but that need to be calculated a bit better to know for sure

    Bum.

Dropped my son at a party 3 miles away. Ran fine on the way. Coming out the car park and the tick over went, had to blip the throttle to stop it dying. Next bit of A road and coming into a roundabout and as soon as the clutch was in the rev dropped off a cliff till it cut out, bumped it and ran like poop round the roundabout. Took my daughter into McDs and it ticked over fine. Left and next set of lights it died again. Restarted straight away but didn't feel happy.

Sods law. I take it into garage and it runs fine and then cuts out 3 times in 3 miles after cutting out twice in 2.5 months.

    Just ordered this.
    https://www.amazon.co.uk/NEXPEAK-Uni...aps,157&sr=8-5

Amazon had it as same day delivery so will get it tonight. Will plug it in and drive in tomorrow and see if it picks anything up. On the drive in today the engine just doesn't feel right, like it's missing and lumpy with a jerky throttle response at times. Hoping the live feed will pick something up.

Did you try disconnecting the MAF sensor?

No, wouldn't know how or what I was doing so left it all alone. Wouldn't disconnecting cause it's own issues anyway?
