Used bikes in Malta are expensive. Like around 3,000 for a normal condition 1997 CB400 expensive. Like 1,300 for a dog of a 1997 400 Fazer expensive.

So why not buy new instead?

The local dealer has these on sale (end of line maybe?) for 3,000. That's around 2,000 less than a Yamaha MT125.

28hp, 155kg dripping wet, should do to run around Malta, which is about 20km from tip to tip of the main island.

So the only question then, is red or black? What would you put your money on?

I reckon the thing that does in most Chinese (and some Korean) bikes in the UK is their susceptibility to road salt and corrosion. You'll not get much of that in Malta

    But it's no Bullet 500.

How much is an old 125 in Malta? You only compare with 400s?

First thing to mention, the only 125 I'd have would b a Grom. Cheapest on Marketplace is 2,500€.

To compare apples with apples, the cheapest CBR250 is 2,900€ for a 2012.

To give an idea what bigger bikes go for, the cheapest 2008+ Hornet (I like that model but not so much the previous one) is 3,700€.

    FTFY

FWIW, my tax bill (including national insurance) here is pretty comparable to what it was in Gibraltar, which wasn't that much different than in UK.

In Gib you had to be making the big bucks before you had an advantage, which even then was mainly because NI was capped around 25 a week. IDK where the line is in Malta.

And the main roads are gridlocked, whilst the back roads will shake your fillings out.

True story. Hence looking at 250s and 400s.

    Runways are always handy

When i was in the RAF one of the stations was usually closed for flying at the weekends so we would play on the runway with whatever fast bikes or cars we could lay our hands on

Not especially, as you have to pay import duty. You'd also have to get a km/h speedo unless it switches by a button press.

Bikes imported after 2009 are also less desirable as the road tax is markedly higher on them.

There is apparently still a trade to be done bringing UK and 10 year old JDM vehicles over when they become undesirable in Japan, but the market seems to be cornered already.

So if we have a van full of Bandit 600's we can make a killing if you flog them
