    Not necessarily true...the header tank can act as a bypass, and if a small amount gets through it can be enough to warm the outgoing pipe.

    Further investigation does seem to say its the thermostat. They are well known for it around this mileage and also if the car doesn't reach the correct operating temp the auto stop/start thing stopps working, which it has. So its having a new thermostat fitted on Saturday and a new belt tensioner and serpentine belt. And two new fecking tyres and front brake pads. Merry Bastard Christmas!

    For the benefit of the archives, new thermostat solved the problem. Mechanic told me they can often be intermittent. Also teh thermostat is upgraded and if you have the old one, you'll need a new piece of loom which is 25, fortunately ours already had the upgraded one.
