Once you start knocking out the bread and butter, commuters, and give them an acceptable alternative, the way back becomes increasingly difficult.
Likewise, my employer is encouraging us to work from home one day per week, one day from site and the remaining three days in the office and I think they're pushing it to compensate for lack of pay rises and bonuses. At least three team members have taken this perk further by moving to the shires and WFH permanently. They come to the office (London) once a month (and they expense the travel costs) so they have an instant 4k pay increase due to no travel costs alone over everyone else.

From my time in NHS ops:
    - we need bigger hospitals/more beds.
    - we need more nurses, drs etc. Yesterday
    - we need to stop working people until they burn out and then wonder why it goes tits up.
    - PFI and Service contracts need renegotiating, scrapping or at least fucking robust service level agreements.

Far too sensible, the management will never accept it. Their alternative -

More managers, so they can send them to foreign parts to recruit abroad.
More pay for CEOs, everbody knows a good CEO needs at least 250k pa to motivate them.
    Outsource stuff to private enterprise.
Push patients out the door ASAP long before they are fit, good for the stats if they come back, it is a new admission.

Haven't they had a few years to have decided that?
Of course they could just up nurses wages to 40k pa.
Nurses that left the NHS to go private would be tempted back, people who considered nursing as a career but dismissed it will re consider and 'foriegn' nurses would decide it is worth jumping though some hoops to come and work in England.

Upping nurses pay would also increase productivity. It'd give them fewer reasons to hang about the nurses station bemoaning their lot with their colleagues.

You want to do more with more resources.

You increase productivity by doing more with the same resources or doing the same with fewer resources.

Paying nurses may very well be a GOOD THING ( Sellar & Yeatman) but it doesn't lead to improved productivity.

My election forecast (yeah, I don't mind making a fool of myself)

Very roughly (total <> no seats):

    Conservative: 350 (majority 75)
    Labour: 175
    SNP.......: 40
    Lib Dem: 40
    Others.. : 20
    (Total 275)

    <edit>

This is predicated on the proposition that, when faced with the likelihood that a vote for the Brexit Party might split the vote in such a way that it would increase the probability of a Remain oriented candidate (such Labour or Lib Dem) being elected, the most likely voting behaviour of Brexit Party supporters will be to vote Conservative.

My election forecast (yeah, I don't mind making a fool of myself)

Cons want to win, but fear they may not
Lab don't want to win, but fear they might
Brexit know they won't win, but scent causing embarrassment
LibDem would love to win, by probably won't - but think that a good catch of seats is possible
SNP scent the chance of another referendum, so will go all-out
Greens know they won't win, but might pick up a seat or two

    My forecast
Red sky at night for much of London and parts of the north
Clear blue skies for most of the shires
Fair to middling in the south and some central regions
Dark clouds forming over Scotland, which will gather pace and quickly sweep south with the potential to cause havoc over Westminster
