The United Arab Emirates imported $456m worth of sand, stone and gravel in 2014, according to the UN. Despite being in the heart of the desert, imported sand built Dubai, according to Pascal. Wind-formed desert sand is too smooth for construction.

Once you start knocking out the bread and butter, commuters, and give them an acceptable alternative, the way back becomes increasingly difficult.
Likewise, my employer is encouraging us to work from home one day per week, one day from site and the remaining three days in the office and I think they're pushing it to compensate for lack of pay rises and bonuses. At least three team members have taken this perk further by moving to the shires and WFH permanently. They come to the office (London) once a month (and they expense the travel costs) so they have an instant £4k pay increase due to no travel costs alone over everyone else.

From my time in NHS ops:
    - we need bigger hospitals/more beds.
    - we need more nurses, drs etc. Yesterday
    - we need to stop working people until they burn out and then wonder why it goes tits up.
    - PFI and Service contracts need renegotiating, scrapping or at least fucking robust service level agreements.

Far too sensible, the management will never accept it. Their alternative -

More managers, so they can send them to foreign parts to recruit abroad.
More pay for CEOs, everbody knows a good CEO needs at least £250k pa to motivate them.
    Outsource stuff to private enterprise.
Push patients out the door ASAP long before they are fit, good for the stats if they come back, it is a new admission.

    They also need to:

    - Sack the huge proportion of lazy useless twats that infest the NHS
    - stop pretending all staff are hero’s - only in it for the good of people.
    - stop wasting money between trusts - make a standard and all work to it
    - get rid of the buying framework and many if not all of the SFIs
    - when making someone “redundant” ban them from re-hire. Many get big fat golden handshakes and then come back under another job name doing exactly the same job on contract rates
    - use the money more wisely, for care not management
    - stop the practice of company cars to all and sundry
    - far fewer management tiers

    Etc etc etc

Haven't they had a few years to have decided that?
Of course they could just up nurses wages to £40k pa.
Nurses that left the NHS to go private would be tempted back, people who considered nursing as a career but dismissed it will re consider and 'foriegn' nurses would decide it is worth jumping though some hoops to come and work in England.

Upping nurses pay would also increase productivity. It'd give them fewer reasons to hang about the nurses station bemoaning their lot with their colleagues.

You want to do more with more resources.

You increase productivity by doing more with the same resources or doing the same with fewer resources.

Paying nurses may very well be a GOOD THING (© Sellar & Yeatman) but it doesn't lead to improved productivity.
