    I am.
Hope you are Sat down as this is a bit of a story.
Last year I was tugged en route to an MOT.
Coppers gave me the " do you know why we've stopped you" speel. I was honest and upfront with them and they told me they would be reporting it .
Later that week I changed all my UK addresses and forgot about the incident.
Fast forward to late October I get a phone call from the daughter who tells me there is a bailiff with a warrant for the removal of goods at her old place, which apart from having some mail forwarded there 2 years ago has nothing to do with me.
So I give Mr Williams a call and ask some relevant questions.
£987 for what I enquire. Apparently I was found guilty in absentia and now they want the money. Mr Williams informed me that the courts had handed everything to the enforcement agency and wouldn't speak to me about the case now..................oh really!
A quick call to the courts, an email statutory declaration and the a quick call to Mr Williams to tell him (politely) to fuck off.
Anyhow the courts have decided to re open the case and a new summons has been issued at the correct address. How much costs can I claim btw.

If you were really going directly to or from a booked MoT, you didnít need tax.

That doesnít apply if the story about the MoT isnít true.

You may need a record or evidence of the appointment. Not just the test, the appointment.

Just for the record, one of the tactics employed by the police is to ask you a question in such a way as your answer will incriminiate yourself.

So, why do you think I stopped you?
How fast were you going? Etc.

The answer of "I'm not exactly sure, can you please tell me?" might just end up with them saying an offence thats less than the one you thought was the reason.

    Maybe.

On my life guv'na i was going directly to the test.
Only issue is that it was 10/10/18, so no idea if the records will still be available. I'll give them a call though just to be sure.

That's only true unless the vehicle is already MOT'd and there no reason why tax couldn't have been purchased.

I'm old and wise enough not to fall for the so how fast do you think you were travelling etc.
But not having RFL is fairly straight forward, and has been pointed out, not an offence in certain circumstances.

IIRC you can't buy tax for a vehicle that has not got an MOT.

So, if the tax and MOT had lapsed (bike off the road for more than a year for example, and SORN declaration made), then no, you can't buy tax before the MOT.

I get the point that Ant is garbling. If you’re re-testing before the MoT runs out, it should be taxed.

IIRC there are other caveats, such as nearest test centre and pre-booked.

On the other hand, can obvious contrition get you off with a warning?

It's called the 'attitude test'. As a copper I knew explained, "You're not booked until your name's in the book".

Pre booked yes, nearest I'm not sure.

There was a brief time up here when there were no bike MOT testers. Fine for using on the island but once on the mainland you had to be travelling to a pre booked MOT. Nearest wasn't mentioned as you might want to use a branded dealer, not some random garage you've never used before. How far you could travel was a bit moot, and possibly one you'd not want to suffix with 'Your Honour'.

I'm happy to be corrected by written legislation, the chap's getting on and might retire soon. There's half a dozen mechanics and the only one without a bike licence is the chap who does the bike testing Grandfathered in, and you should see the pulley and wire contraption they have for brake testing.

Aye, thats why I said "Maybe"

To be fair I have given the answer of "About 110"* and just been given a stern warning but if I was just ten or so miles per hour over it would have been worth a shot.

*Quite an underestimation of the actual speed and if I'd said 70 he would have known I was just taking the piss.
