I've found that lubing them usually has the opposite effect and you end up with a load of sticky gunge down the cable
I see throttle cables are coated with something now? Do you lube them with anything now or will the lube affect the coating?

I use powdered graphite. It seems to work well, for me anyway.
If they're nylon lined, no need. If not, I use GT85. Make a little funnel out of plasticine over the cable end and fill that then let it drain.
