    That's a pretty cool feature.

I only know about it as I had a user ask me if the warning was kosher this morning.

As Chrome automatically updates I'm sure more and more people well get the warning!

    Just for you yozza.

Google have lists of all the usernames and passwords from hacked websites.

They compare this list to all the usernames and passwords you have saved in Chrome (if you use Chrome) and warn you if they find a match.

There's been website and even browser add-ins before, but now it's properly baked into the Chrome.

Works well, but google know your passwords too, so can tell you specifically which password it is you need to change (if you use more than one).

Google doesn't know your passwords, Chrome knows your passwords.

Where do you think Chrome keeps them?

Now that is VERY clever feature. I wasn't even aware there is a password-checking extension, and I'd rate myself as reasonably-tech savvie.

"Building Password Checkup into Chrome should make password auditing more mainstream. Only the most security-conscious people would seek out and install the Chrome extension or perform the full password audit at passwords.google.com, and these people probably have better password hygiene to begin with."

That's a bit of a simplistic overview, actually. Blaming the end user for poor password practices is like blaming a driver for his own injuries after the wheel fell off the brand-new car he was driving!

The problem is rather less poor 'password hygiene' and rather more 'too many unnecessary services hidden behind a username / password combo'. That means that not only are there far more services out there storing user names / email addies / password combos than really need them, but they often do so on less-than-secure systems.

I'm appalled at how many times my access details and passwords have been lost by services I've signed up to - I think LastFM was the first, and one of the biggies was Yahoo. And there is absolutely NO comeback for the end user, just huge inconvenience. An old email address got hacked years ago when I was rather more naive and so I've been getting spam on that account for years. It was also used to generate spam which caused a significant problem as the address was blacklisted.

Any news on when (and IF) this update will spread to Chrome-based browsers, rather than Chrome itself?

Chrome encrypts them, Google gets the encrypted version. It's in the article you linked.

It gets the hashes to compare to the hashes google has in it's Rainbow Tables, probably.

If you have a Google account you use in Chrome, you'll find that your passwords follow you around, from pooter to pooter, in that case your passwords are stored in your google account.
