Was thinking about replacing my Samsung Galaxy S6 with a phone with a larger flat screen, and higher screen and touch refresh rate. Then read this review among others of the forthcoming Qualcomm 865 chip with 5G ...

    https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2019...tphone-design/

The Snapdragon 865 will make phones worse in 2020, thanks to mandatory 5G.

Qualcomm recently took the wraps off its flagship SoC for 2020, the Snapdragon 865. As usual, we can expect this chip in all the high-end Android smartphones in 2020, and it's 25 percent faster than last year, with fancy new camera features and AI-accelerating co-processors.

What's unusual is the way Qualcomm designed the LTE modem in the Snapdragon 865: it doesn't have one.

This means nearly every flagship Android phone will be a 5G phone in 2020, and putting the 5G and 4G on a giant extra chip means smartphones are going to use way more power, no matter which cell network you're connected to. When 5G networks are only going to be in their infancy in 2020, this sounds like an across-the-board downgrade to me.
... and decided to avoid this chip and look for a (sim free) phone with a Qualcomm 855 which is a fully integrated chip, >60hz screen refresh, >90hz touch refresh, 3.5mm jack, not premium price, (S)AMOLED etc. Don't care about 5G, widespread availability is probably (?) years away.

Saw the realme X2 Pro EU version (CE) online with UK charger with 8GB/128GB UFS 3.0 etc. for €449 (401). Read the reviews, and bought it.

    https://www.realme.com/eu/

Absolutely amazing phone with 90Hz screen refresh and 135Hz touch refresh, rocket ship and quality build, came with software to copy the contents of my Samsung Galaxy S6. All for 400!

Just goes to show what you can get when national distributor and retailer margins are chopped out of the price.

    (Edit 1)

Forgot to say, one new phone minor criteria was wireless charging which the phone does not have, but it genuinely recharges in 30 minutes so it really doesn't matter. Incredible.

    (Edit 2)

With OTG the phone successfully mounts and accesses a 1TB WD Blue disk drive (formatted to ExFat of course). Nice for backups, much faster writing small files than flash drives

Realme sounds a bit like they're ripping off the Redmi Xiaomi brand.

I'm seriously tempted by several of the Xiaomi range, but the lack of NFC on the low/mid range handsets is a problem for me.

BBK, which owns Oneplus, Oppo, realme, and Vivo, is the world's third largest phone manufacturer. The X2 Pro has NFC, here are the specs:

I've just found that out on the Which review

I had a OnePlus5, it was a reasonable phone... but there was a bit of controversy when OnePlus used a VW stylee 'Cheat Device' to ensure it scored high on benchmark tests.

Speaking of NFC. Does the Xiaomi Mi8 from GearBest have NFC? Because I was this close to buying a Mi8 but then I've noticed that in the product page the specs didn't show NFC but there are other listings who show NFC in the specs! I need NFC in my daily life. Bus and train pass, college dorm acess and etc.

Ooh look, exactly the same question was asked in 2018 in the below link.
