Hi, we're an on and off road motorcycle charity, since 1989, providing disadvantaged young people the opportunity to experience motorcycles and other off-road vehicles in a safe and legal environment. Check out Bumpy Ltd if you want further information.

Anyway, the reason for our post is that we were donated, from a well known classic collectors auction after his funeral (we can disclose further information in PM if needed), a GPZ500 - KH1 KZ550D, which I've found out is the first edition model of the GPZ500 from 1980/81

We haven't done anything to it apart from store it, so it hasn't run and we don't have any paperwork for it either.

We wish to sell it to put funds back into our small charity, but haven't advertised it as yet as we're wanting to get a rough idea of how much something like this would sell for.

I've tried to attach a few photos, but unable to but I can send some upon request if you send me a message with your address...if that's allowed(?)

    Thank you

Chris - BUMPY Ltd - Registered Charity Number 702335

First thing you need to work out is if its a GPz500, watercooled twin or a GPz550 air cooled 4 cylinder. probably the later. Price would depend entirely on condition.

This is an early GPZ550 (actually a Z550gp if you want to be accurate)

    https://www.bing.com/images/search?v...vt=0&eim=1,2,6

One of these in reasonable condition but in need of restoration would be worth 1K maximum if you can find someone who wants it.
In good, running, MOT'd condition maybe 2K, but I think 1.5K would be more realistic, but again, good luck finding someone who wants to buy it and pay good money for it.

They were an okay middle weight bike back in the 80s, and sold on the reputation of the GPz1100s, but they were nothing outstanding.

We would love to have the time to do this up and race it...but we don't have the experience, time or money! We'd probably want to raise as much money for our charity as possible but we're not desperate to sell it for peanuts either

    Definitely a GPz550 air cooled (Z550D)

Join the Z1OC forum, have a word with Gerry who runs the forum, he might let you post a for sale thread without paying the 12 membership fee, someone on there might be interested in it.
Otherwise advertise it on eBay with a 1K reserve

FWIW something like that is a perfect commuting bike for someone who needs to include a little bit of motorway in their journey. (or open country road). Reliable as a very reliable thing as I understand these things.

It's over 30 years since I rode one but the above is correct, they can suffer from electrical faults, the wiring to the right hand handle bar switch causes them to blow the main fuse. Engine is good so long as you change the oil and check the shims, Z400J was the same bike with smaller bores for those that couldn't handle the awesome power of the 550, there was a Moriwaki 600cc kit available for those who wanted more.

Kawasaki GT550 uses much the same engine but with a shaft drive, the chassis is very similar as well.

Nice looking bike and probably worth 1,000-1,500. The only thing that would put me off buying is the lack of paperwork- I see it has KM/H clocks is it UK registered? If so I would suggest getting a replacement V5 - much easier to sell with one IMO (I might be tempted myself tbh)

I know the GT550 (shaftie) was a courier favourite in the 80s and 90s, which is always a good sign.

If I had the room and it was the right price I'd probably buy it, I fancy a mid size bike to tootle round on.
