So with support for Windows 7 now finished, is it time to panic?!

Doubt it. XP ended up getting support after the date what i think was meant to be for corporate/business use but a way round that was made available within weeks. Expect the same here.

Timing is everything. The day after windows 7 updates ceased (for mortals anyway) - Windows 10 Has a Security Flaw So Severe the NSA Disclosed It

Microsoft released a patch for Windows 10 and Server 2016 today after the National Security Agency found and disclosed a serious vulnerability. It's a rare but not unprecedented tip-off, one that underscores the flaw's severity—and maybe hints at new priorities for the NSA.

The bug is in Windows' mechanism for confirming the legitimacy of software or establishing secure web connections. If the verification check itself isn't trustworthy, attackers can exploit that fact to remotely distribute malware or intercept sensitive data.

"[We are] recommending that network owners expedite implementation of the patch immediately as we will also be doing," Anne Neuberger, head of the NSA's Cybersecurity Directorate, said on a call with reporters on Tuesday. "When we identified a broad cryptographic vulnerability like this we quickly turned to work with the company to ensure that they could mitigate it."

I can't see why anybody would still run Windows 7.

    W10 was/is a free upgrade.

W10 runs better on lower spec hardware than 7.

The only reason for running 7 I can think of is if you have some legacy software that won't run under W10.

or... you're a miserable old bastard who doesn't like change?

Malicious attacks are becoming more and more complex, we all winge about updates, but unless you're going to go down the linux or OSX route, W10 and it's bi-annual major revisions is the only way to combat the fraudsters.

We switched all systems to Windows 10 over two years ago and have been glad to do so. Only one person is still on Windows 7 as they are based oop North and don't come down for meetings. Remote working and all that. but they know they have to hand over the laptop for the "upgrade" to the new system.

Just easier to manage and yes, the updates are a pain at times, but we can manage the rollout and do test on seperate systems. Upgrading all servers to 2016 very soon as well.

For me, it was legacy software on one PC and the other thing was I have it on one laptop and it's been nothing but a pain with updates taking ages when all I want to do is shut the computer down and I'm a software remainer, I don't like change, I want things to stay the same.
