Apparently, I'm a philistine, but I've always preferred the Fine Young Cannibals' version of 'Suspicious Minds' to Elvis's version.

Almost any Beatles song covered by anyone else. Yes they could write songs but did not sing them all that well.

Bobby Fuller Four singing "I Fought the Law" is better than the Crickets' 1959 original.

Did any of those previous threads mention "Over the Rainbow" by Gene Vincent?

Interviewer: Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?
Lennon: He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles

I have noticed that slagging off The Beatles is as near to breaking herecy laws as you can get in this country these days. They were good, but there were highs and lows, but although overall I'd say they've added to the pop genre over the years.
Mind you, go to Sweden and criticise Abba and you'll know the full fury of a Swedish hissy-fit.

Just to keep the thread on-topic can I also add Jonny Cash's 'Hurt'?

Some shocking pronouncements so far, both the Depeche Mode tracks were infinitely superior to the covers. Blondie, Marvin Gaye, Jimi all bang on.

Love is the Drug - Grace Jones (mind you any version is better than by that fucking pub singer)
    Demolition Man - Grace Jones
    Batman theme - The Jam
    Secret Agent Man - Devo
D'ya wanna dance - The Ramones
    David Watts - The Jam
Little Wing - various (although this should really go in a separate thread entitled "songs with more than one version of real quality". One of the best, believe it or not, is Sting's! (Hiram Bullock on guitar, Mark Egan on bass, Kenward Dennard on drums, a super-cool line-up!)

That reminds me - The Sex Pistol's version of My Way was better than Frank Sinatra's original:

The Bonzo Dog Dooh Dah Band's version of The Sound of Music added something that was lacking in the film version:
