I was thinking the other day about how many bike shops/mechanics there used to be in Edinburgh compared to now. What about where you live?
Heres a list of the ones that were all trading at one time over the years I have been biking:

    AF Motorcycles : Gone
    Royall Motorcycles: Gone
    Mainstream Motorcycles: Gone
Pitstop (breakers) : Gone (Where are you punk George?)
    J+M (BREAKERS) :Gone
    Alvins Suzuki dealer: Gone
    Better Bikes Kawasaki/Moto Guzzi:Gone
Moto Cal: Gone but now runs Saltire Suzuki
    Ernie Page: Gone
West Pier Motorcycles: Gone (owner died)
    Carrick Yamaha:Still there
    Honda Two Wheels: Still there
    Mark1 (Breakers/repairs): Still there

So from up to 13 places trading on or around the same time it is down to 4.

Not surprised when you look at the price of renting premises (as I did fairly recently here in the South). It's well expensive these days. I suspect (no figures or proof) that in the old days you could rent an out-of-the-way workshop for not too much money. These days you'll just be taking in money from punters to pass on to a landlord. Plus no-one wants a workshop anywhere near their house. Much rather have boarded up empty places, and charity shops

Customer loyalty? Worth nothing these days. Low priced internet stuff? Brilliant. You get the service you deserve. (not you personally, public in general). There are probably still almost the same number of bikes around.

    Harley Davidson.
There's also a bike breakers in Gorebridge - Home and YPE tuning in Bonnyrigg

The one that's been shut down on Dalkeith Rd for years was in the paper as there was repairs caused by leaks there that have been passed onto all the flats above as the council can't find the owner.

Town with about a hundred thousand and there's four road bike shops and one motocross shop. Pretty good I reckon.

[Edit] there's also a Hein Gerr, Hein Ger, err German bike clothing and accessory shop.

I can only think of two that are gone, one was a fly-by-night mob anyway, and the other an old boy who only did classics.
All the others, as far as I know are still up and running.

Well that'll be either one or two depending on the boundary you'll allow

GD Brown in Godalming seems to do quite well at the scooter market and has done ever since I was a yoof but also for secondhand general sales.

A mile further along there is Guildford Harley Davidson which I understand has done pretty well in its short history so far - apart from SDFs Buell of course..

Forgot about the Harley place, Alvins used to have the franchise for them years ago too.
I also forgot about A3P (Dalkeith Road) I remember Calum from Saltire working there.I bought an N2 powervalve off them many moons ago.

A3P is the one that has landed the flats above with x-000 bills.

Here's a thread on another forum going on about all the shops in town:
Edinburgh bike MOT Test centres - Honda VFR Club

All before my time, I've only been riding for about 3 years.

Interesting thread, theres even more on there that I had forgotten. Lol at being reminded of Better Bikes selling Smoked Salmon in the same shop as the bikes! I remember Russ Manson (Carricks) saying of one of his staff who worked up there "Dave? His head is full of fucking fish!"

No bike shops at all in the town and only 2 back street type workshops... Closest bike shop is probably the 3 or 4 that still exist in Norwich which also has a branch of HG

Going back 20 years I remember loads in Glasgow with several on Gt Western Road which are now nearly all gone. There used to be a dealership for each major manufacturer and some of the jap ones had more than one outlet plus idependants all competing

One in Mildenhall, Hislops - proper old fashioned bike shop, fixes things, doesn't sell owt.
Four in BSE (12 miles) - generic Jap dealer (don't go in there), good Aprilia/Guzzi dealer, good old skool bike shop, very dear Harley custom place.
Just outside Bury - good chopper/custom place (Stanton) and good spares place (Barrow).
Newmarket (7 miles) - little shop in Station Road, dunno what they're like, and dunno if New Heath are still there, Black Bear H-D.
Ely (15 miles) - good breakers.
Downham Market (20 miles or so) - excellent old skool shop for fixing things.
Cambridge (25 miles) - good old skool shop and probably some others too, but don't know/use 'em. Oh, and Wheelfit at Waterbeah.

In York we lost a few all in one go as Miles Kingsport from Hull took over the Honda dealership and the Kawaskai/Aprillia dealership, then got in to some money difficultes and shut the Kawaksi/Aprilia shop and then sold the Honda premesis to be turned back to residential housing as it was in 2 or 3 converted victorian terrace houses.

Since then we've had a number of independent dealerships open but lost the Yam dealer but that was always a really weird place that never seemed to sell anything.
