They'll want to know whether the time off has helped you, answer constructively and positively, if indeed it has and you don't need anymore.

Thanks for that. I'm glad I asked as it was very formal and a bit awkward for both sides. I found myself in the no mans land of whether to answer, mind your own business, or thanks for asking!

Turned down a job. Never done that for a 'proper' job before. Feels odd.

I have a bad back. So in the spirit of 'keeping it moving' I thought I'd do a bit of work on an engine. I needed to get the starter out and I ended up climbing into the engine compartment, down the side of the engine and having a right to do with the starter motor bolts. 2 bolts, but they took me nearly 90 minutes to undo. And now I ache all over, have skinned knuckles, shoulders, elbows and knees.

In the next exciting episode watch balbas:-
Curse as he rebuilds a starter solenoid
Gives up and buys a new starter
Curse very loudly as he skins his knuckles, knees, shoulders and elbows refitting the starter motor
Becomes apoplectic with rage when the engine still fails to start

Tune in later this week kids.

Long way from most places, but Aus is 4 hours on the plane and NZ 3 hrs. But I know what you're saying.

It's a very high placed government job, totally career changing for her.
If this is your last opportunity to give something like that a go, then I’d give it a go. Fiji is big for one of the pacific nations and no, it’s not all a tropical paradise, there are limited prospects for many of the islanders so some social problems. And it has racial tensions, the British behaved pretty poorly as a colonial power and historically at the time of independence the whip
jand was held by the Indian minority

and yes, you’d have to embrace the isolation. No nipping down to Waitrose or Marks

Lots of cheap charter and low cost flights to NZ and Aus if you need to escape the developing world for a weekend, but yeah: it is a developing nation

i quite liked Fiji, wouldn’t live there but then I have young kids. I wouldn’t live in the Emirates either, different strokes innit?

That's a good thing, it means you are aiming high and trying.

Oh yes absolutely...I don't NEED a new job now so it was just speculative. As Mrs D succinctly put it "you're good enough now that they need to convince you to come and work for them, not the other way around".

Still feels like sods law is gonna step in and I'll be made redundant tomorrow or summink

I get why you wouldn’t live in either place, neither of them are nicer than Suffolk in an English summer - although both would be better than Burnley in an English winter

The thing for us is the amenities, the education facilities, the job prospects, the crime levels and the social opportunities - not necessarily in that order - but they are absolute essentials and potential deal breakers. The South Pacific is lacking in too many of those areas, whereas here mostly excels in them all.

Basically you need to decide what you’re willing to give up and what will you get back as the reward for doing that.
We gave up being close to family and some of our hobbies for financial reward and private schooling, our youngest has excelled in the school system here.
