I've managed to talk Mrs GP out of a week on the beach doing nothing as a summer holiday. Instead, we're going to drive down to the SoF via the Vendee and the Pyrenees. I'm doing a bike trip that way in June down to Santander, so it'll be a similar route but we'll be driving back up.

I'll be selling the Elgrand and getting a little convertible.
    Current thinking is:

    2.0 160bhp Mazda MX5
    2.0 TFSi Audi TT convertible
    125M sport BMW
Porsche Boxster - most are a bit leggy at this price though....

    Max budget around 6k

What am i missing? what to look out for.

Trouble with touring in a 2 seater convertible, is when the roof is down, it goes into the boot where you'd normally have your luggage and you cant fit both. So a 4 seater will at least allow you to put stuff on the back seats.

Yeah, understood. I'm after a rag top rather than a folding metal roof though. B-I-L had an SL500 that had fuck all space in the boot with the roof folded up in it! I think both the TT and The MX% have plenty of room.

4 seaters look really naff IMO unless they're an old classic. the 1 series just about gets away with it.

Merc is a good call although going back to tiepins comment regarding boot space, not sure how much there would be. I'm also reminded of the cost of getting the servos fixed on the hood and boot Mechansim on BiL's SL which is essentially the same..

Can pick up a decent 350 in budget though....hmmm...

Such fun. You'll even get over 30mpg on a run. Go on. You know you want to.

I did a tour of France and Switzeland in an SLK when my van broke down, 2 people with bicycles and luggage, a little cramped, but great fun

I won't ask about the bicycles but is the boot deep enough to get a week's luggage in with the roof in there?

We drove with the roof up from hotel to hotel and unpacked when we got there for roof down fun. My boot had a section above the spare wheel that you could remove/invert that gave a bit more space (see link), we managed 3 weeks in various hotels, but did use laundry service to wash clothes, if you pack in soft luggage I reckon you can easily get a weeks luggage in the boot with the roof down. The issue with boot size is more about the entrance to the boot with the roof down rather than the boot space.

The bikes were on a bike rack.

My SIL has a Z3, older soft top one. It also has the luggage rack on the boot. Staight six engine, goes like stink if you boot it and you can cruise comfortably as well. Top down it is a hoot and suprisingly comfortable top up as well.

Cheap as and pretty solid. The only thing that does not work on it is the seat motor to drop the seat height. They hold value quite well though.
