Also i don't really want to do things like that for wankers. If they we're good people i would of no doubt of done something like this, but they are wankers so i treated them like wankers.
I'm still not understanding. Your job is to be their IT support (please correct me if I'm wrong there). So - is provisioning not part of that?

Ah, but you are not buying a banana for £120,000. You are buying an idea and a certificate of authenticity. Banana eaten

To be fair to GM - I doubt hardware upgrades are part of the contract. Once done with no po you are likely to get “we never asked for that” and no payment. Or a 6month battle to get your money.

Education get dirt and I mean dirt cheap M$ licenses, they should stick it all in Sharepoint on 365. No more worries about capacity and DR becomes less of an issue. Students personal data should all be in their own OneDrives.

It's how a lot of the schools we support work it.

I have to agree. No PO, no go. With these organisations it is money up front and paid for or you will never see it and they will sue you because you did the work and fixed the problem, but they did not ask you for it.

It that's the case, then fair enough, but why not say that in the story?

Yes i support their IT, i do not control their budget nor am i happy to use my own money to buy things for people who 1. won't appreciate it and 2. will most likely never give me the money back as others have also alluded to.

As far as provisioning goes, i advise what they need, source the part and quote to the business manager and it is then up to them to order the part, but even after numerous badgering and stressing how important this part was in this instance, they just didn't order it!

TBH i thought that was common sense, do you not.

If your PC at work started going slow and your boss said you can;t have a new one will you go and spank £1000 on a new one yourself, of course not, why is my circumstance any different? common sense!

This morning I was doing 70mph down the A13 on my bike and two insulation boards fly out of the back of a truck! I literally had to swerve and duck as they flew over my head! That was more than lucky...

Where have I suggested that you buy it with your own money?? I was just trying to understand why you're ranting about something that supposedly you are in a position to fix. Without the information that provisioning is not part of your remit, which you didn't supply, it was an assumption that provisioning wasn't part of your remit. All I know is that you've told us you're in IT support and that you provide that support for a lot of schools. My (incorrect) assumption was that provisioning would be part of it and so I couldn't understand why you'd be ranting about something you're in a position to sort out.

Now it's clear. Yes, they're idiots who don't understand IT and it's intricacies - but then so are the vast majority of people, even those who work daily with computers. It's part of our jobs to accept that and deal with them appropriately.
