If you want it, and there aint many about then you'll need to pay what the seller thinks its worth.
Or continue dreaming and looking at pictures of them.

Its fairly simple really, if thats what they're selling for then thats what they're worth, if its not selling then its probably not worth it.
A slight misunderstanding in the intent of my post. I do appreciate the valid point you are making above. My point was that every bit of 25 year old rubbish is being punted as classic and thereby pushing up the prices across the board. Would you call a Honda CB 250 G5 a n example of a classic motorcycle?

I don't think adding "classic" to the title will add any value unless anyone actually wants one.
There must be people out there that want to own these bikes.

They might not be great by modern standards but still desirable, e.g. I remember when you couldn't give an Escort Mk2 away, but now they're worth a fortune.

Somehow I acquired a selection of 250 and 360(?) G5 things at one point. I'm fairly sure I gave them all away, or swapped them for magic beans. Luckily I have none left

To be honest its the same shit every week, articles on "Crack or Brown - the ultimate shootout test" and "Get fucked up for less than 3k" wear thin after a while.
Back in the day it had articles on narcotics that we could all relate to, fun stories about bucket bongs in your mums bathtub and sneaking in at 3am high on E's without your dad sussing you.
Nowadays its all expensive designer shit that looks the same.

    I had an identical RD250C and 400/4. I sold the 250 for 400 in 1980 and the 400/4 for 450 in 1982

I could imagine someone looking for a sunny Sunday bike and paying a few grand for something like the 400/4. With the RD250C -I can;t imagine anyone not wanting to re-live their youth on the 400C instead

    I'd love a DT400MX. but not for 6,000.

    Thats it.
Market that has a definite life span.
Things like AR 50s have been going up for a while after the people who had one years ago have started getting to the point where the kids are grown up and they have a bit of spare cash. Next stop Aprilia then Peugeot Speedfight.

So how come bikes made in the 50's are still very popular and fetching good money, there aren't that many 80yr olds buying them.

Not all the bikes made in the 50s are that desirable. Not all the bikes made in the 80s will, the luck or skill will be picking the right one.

Agreed, but some are, so either there are lots of very old blokes buying bikes or the theory that only people of a certain age like certain bikes is not true.

There are three types of people buying the old bikes, generally all middle-aged. One is the person who fancies having a go at hands-on fettling of an old bike ( or car) which is possible to do because they don't have the computerised gizmos that are needed for modern vehicles. The fun is ( or should be ) in the achievement of rebuilding, not the cost. The second is the type with spare cash who think he will make a good investment by buying what looks good but is probably an expensive bike. The third is the person who buys a basket case with the intention of restoring it and hoping to sell it for a profit. Numbers may be declining but there are still younger people entering the old bike scene.
